     Lake Atitlan is one of the deepest freshwater lakes in the world.  The Lake is a primary source of food for the native indigenous people, offering a variety of species.  Those that I have personally encountered are Black Crappie, Blue Gill,  Largemouth Bass,  Carp and freshwater Crabs.  The game species of choice for Spearfishing in the Lake is Bass,  but its also possible to take the smaller fish as well.  As long as you are a responsible hunter all of the above mentioned fish are open game.  We do freedive spearfishng at Atitlan Adventures we supply everything you need to get your fish.  When using a Rod and Reel you will have a better chance at the pan fish.  Fishing the lake from the shore will give limited results do to the deep water of the Lake and the abundance of underwater vegetation.  I would recommend using a kayak to get to the better fishing spots,  you’ll catch more fish and it’s a fun way to get around the Lake.
